Endometriosis: What It Is and Its Symptoms

Endometriosis is a chronic disease where the tissue that lines the inner wall of the uterus grows on the outside of the uterus. This tissue, called endometrial implants, typically grows on the fallopian tubes and ovaries. In rare cases, the tissue grows on other parts of the body outside the pelvic area.

The endometrial tissue creates a conducive environment for the implantation and growth of an embryo. The tissue is broken down and shed during menstruation when it’s not being used. When tissue is displaced outside the uterus there is no way for it to be shed and the tissue is stuck. Sometimes this can cause cysts on the ovaries, which then irritates the surrounding areas and causes scar tissue to form.

The result of this can lead to pain. Pain with intercourse, menstruation, urination or bowel movements are all symptoms of endometriosis, although the extensiveness of pain does not indicate the severity of the disease. Excessive bleeding and infertility are also symptoms along with bloating, nausea, fatigue and diarrhea during a time of menstruation.

The da Vinci System

How it works:

The Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care surgeon is connected to the da Vinci council, which allows a magnified 3D, high-definition view inside the patient’s body who is positioned on a side cart. The surgeon controls four robotic arms with surgical instrument attachments through the council. One of those arms holds an endoscope, a small camera, allowing the best view for the surgeon. The other arms hold endowrist instruments each with specific surgical tools that mimic the natural movement of the human wrist with an even greater range of motion.
