Fibroids

Posted on Updated on

Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care treats a variety of different gynecological problems, including uterine fibroids. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that appear on a woman’s uterus during childbearing years. Fibroids rarely ever turn into uterine cancer. Some other names for fibroids include leiomyomas, uterine fibroids and myomas. Fibroids develop from the myometrium, the muscular tissue of the uterus, due to rapid cell growth. There are different types of fibroids based on where they are located around the uterus. Fibroids grow at different rates, some slow, some fast, sometimes growing and shrinking. Fibroids that appear during pregnancy will often disappear when the uterus returns to normal size after birth. Three out of four women have fibroids in their lifetime, but they typically go unnoticed due to a lack of symptoms.

The most common symptoms of fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, difficulty with emptying the bladder, frequent urination, constipation, and back or leg pains. In more serious situations, fibroids can cause pain when it outgrows its blood supply, becomes deprived of nutrients and begins to die. Byproducts of the dying fibroid seep into the surrounding tissue. You should see a doctor if you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above.

Endometriosis: What It Is and Its Symptoms

Posted on Updated on

endometriosis1Endometriosis is a chronic disease where the tissue that lines the inner wall of the uterus grows on the outside of the uterus. This tissue, called endometrial implants, typically grows on the fallopian tubes and ovaries. In rare cases, the tissue grows on other parts of the body outside the pelvic area.

A patient with endometriosis may need to undergo surgery. In severe cases, patients may need a hysterectomy. Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care specializes in the surgical treatment of endometriosis. The following offers more information about endometriosis and its symptoms.

The endometrial tissue creates a conducive environment for the implantation and growth of an embryo. The tissue is broken down and shed during menstruation when it’s not being used. When tissue is displaced outside the uterus there is no way for it to be shed and the tissue is stuck. Sometimes this can cause cysts on the ovaries, which then irritates the surrounding areas and causes scar tissue to form.

The result of this can lead to pain. Pain with intercourse, menstruation, urination or bowel movements are all symptoms of endometriosis, although the extensiveness of pain does not indicate the severity of the disease. Excessive bleeding and infertility are also symptoms along with bloating, nausea, fatigue and diarrhea during a time of menstruation.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care today and set up an appointment with our doctors. If you have any questions, please call us at 702-739-6467.

Hysterectomy – A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus and possibly other structures in the pelvic area. Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care’s founder Dr. Lynn Kowlaski specializes in hysterectomies and has performed thousands throughout her career. Her book “Not Your Mother’s Hysterectomy” seeks to empower women who are faced with having hysterectomies and answers every question one might have about the procedure. If you have any questions regarding hysterectomies, please call Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care at 702-739-6467.

Not Your Mothers Hysterectomy

logo-largeDr. Lynn Kowalski has performed over 1,000 hysterectomies, and she shares her expertise on the subject in her book, “Not Your Mother’s Hysterectomy.” Kowalski discusses new surgical technologies available that result in a much smaller incision, therefore, quicker recovery time.

In the past, when a woman needed a hysterectomy, it meant a large cut and a lengthy and painful recovery. Sometimes women were unaware of what was being removed. These horror stories have affected women’s perspective of hysterectomies. Some women even put off surgery due to this fear resulting in even further complications. The aim of Kowalski’s book is to empower and educate women who are facing cancer and potential hysterectomies. She presents possible options and includes first-hand accounts of women who share their personal hysterectomy experiences to the reader. The da Vinci System

Posted on Updated on

Si_0102_Dual-Console_&_PC_vc_camera_FluorescenceNevada Surgery and Cancer Care specializes in minimally-invasive robotic surgery, resulting in quick recovery and less pain. The Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care physicians use the da Vinci Surgical System created by leaders in robotic technology, Intuitive Surgical. The da Vinici system provides the surgeon better vision and a greater ability to maneuver with more accuracy through a smaller incision.

How it works:

The Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care surgeon is connected to the da Vinci council, which allows a magnified 3D, high-definition view inside the patient’s body who is positioned on a side cart. The surgeon controls four robotic arms with surgical instrument attachments through the council. One of those arms holds an endoscope, a small camera, allowing the best view for the surgeon. The other arms hold endowrist instruments each with specific surgical tools that mimic the natural movement of the human wrist with an even greater range of motion. The surgeons are in complete control of the endowrist instruments as their arm movements are translated through the council to the attachments, allowing greater dexterity and targeted accuracy.

The Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care surgeons have years of experience with da Vinci system and are the leaders in robotics surgery in Nevada. Just like traditional surgery, there are risks involved with robotics surgery. If you have any questions regarding robotics surgery or the da Vinci System, please call Nevada Surgery and Cancer Care at 702-739-6467.
